FIeld trip #2On Wednesday, June 29, we will take the bus to Papa Murphy's pizza, where we will learn about the art of making pizza.
Afterwards, we will walk next door, and tour the County Market supermarket. Please bring a refrigerated cooler or bag to bring home treats. |
Things to bring to class

daily food and fun
We are so lucky at Project Seek! SCRED lets us do amazing things - and the town businesses are wonderful to our group!
Today we hopped on the bus and went to County Market. The kids are in groups of 3 and 4, and they are allowed a budget of $10. They researched recipes, and "shopped" the aisles of County Market to see if they could afford ingredients per their budget. Each group was assigned either a salad, appetizer, or dessert.
Next, we walked over to Papa Murphy's Pizza, where we watched Matt make dough, and then we got to help him. Jackie showed the kids how to take pizza orders, and then they got to make their own pizzas.
We went back to County Market, and the manager (Tony) gave us a tour. We learned about what happens behind the scenes of a grocery store.

We stayed in place and learned about the good old U.S.A. today.
What's more American than apple pie? The kids learned how tricky dough is to work with! It was a great learning experience....how to use enough flour to keep the dough from sticking, but not too much flour, because the dough will become tough.
In the end, we had some wonderful apple pies.

Monday, June 27, 2016 - Hola!
Today we traveled south of the border to Mexico.
We played a game called "La Gallinita Ciega" - which means blind chicken (or blind man's bluff) outside. Then we came back inside and made stacked burritos.

Friday, June 24, 2016 - Bonjour!
Today we visited France. I couldn't decide if we should make cream puffs or chocolate mousse...so we made BOTH! The kids were so excited to make a dessert.
We talked about how a cream puff can be filled with anything from whipped cream, custard, ice cream or mousse.
We learned a few French phrases and watched a brief movie on France.

Thursday, June 23, 2016 - Extended Day.
Mill City Museum. We learned about the Washburn Crosby Mill, which was owned by General Mills. This was once the largest flour mill in the world! We rode the Flour Tower, did a scavenger hunt, rode the elevator, and played in the water lab.
It was a beautiful day - and the kids were awesome!

Tomorrow, we are heading to the Mill City Museum for our field trip. Today, we learned about the importance of flour in the world.
And then the fun part! We baked bread. We learned about yeast, why it needs sugar, and that it is a touchy item to make (too much flour or kneading will make a rock).

Welcome to Jolly Old England!
My husband, Graeme, was kind enough to come to our class this morning and talk about his homeland. He was born and raised in Northumberland, in Northeast England (right on the Scottish border).
He talked to the kids about food, sports, castles, cars, the language difference, and Harry Potter. :)
After he left, we made Cornish Pasties! Pasties are a meat pie that were a handheld meal for the miners. Their hands were always dirty (and full of toxic stuff like asbestos), so they held onto the thick crust and then threw that part away.

Monday, June 20, 2016 - Buon Giorno from Italy!
Who doesn't like Italian food?
Today, we talked about why Italians eat the certain foods that they eat (growing climate is conducive to growing delicious things such as tomatoes and grapes).
We learned about our taste buds and studied a tongue "map" that showed us where most people taste sweet, salty, or bitter/sour foods. Then the kids did their own experiment with trying to see which part of their tongue tasted honey (sweet), lemon (sour), cocoa (bitter), and salt (salty). The results were surprising (and hilarious).
After snack, we make Lasagna Roll Ups.

Friday, June 17, 2016- Sweden!
Hej (Hey! or Hi!)
Today we travelled to Sweden!
First, we did a taste test. The kids tried to guess the difference between name brand vs. generic Doritos, graham crackers, cola, cupcakes, and cereal. Most of the time they were correct! They learned the importance of using ALL of their senses with food. Sometimes they were pretty accurate just with sight. Sometimes they were surprised that the generic tasted better.
After snack, they made a Swedish tea ring. Some of the kids were kind of disappointed - they thought that Tea ring would have tea in it. I explained that it was just the name...similar to "Coffee Cake" which doesn't have coffee in it. Once they heard it was a pastry with cream cheese, they were all excited again! :)
It was a lot of students first time using a mixer! It's important to keep the beaters INSIDE the bowl when mixing cream cheese and sugar.
All of the students were so excited at the end result. They all made beautiful tea rings!

Welcome to our Continental Kitchen! This year, once again, my daughter (Sophie) and I will be teaching your children to keep an open mind, and an open stomach to try new tastes. We might not like everything we try, but some things that we "THINK" we hate might become new favorites!
On this first day, we went over safety, rules, and hygiene in the kitchen. We made passports that will enable us to travel around the world and learn about new countries, customs, and foods. We decorated our aprons, and got to know one another.
After snack, we made Granola Parfaits. The kids were excited about certain berries being their favorites!
