Exploration: Oceans! - Farewell
Project SEEK 2016 is now over. Many of the students said they wish it would have lasted longer. It was a great group of kids this year, and it was fun to get to know each of them over the past twelve days. Thank you families for your support! It was great to meet you at open house; I can tell you do a lot to encourage your children's curiosity at home.
For those of you who asked, here is the recipe for the crystals:
Finally, one of the activities we did to learn about jellyfish might be one you would enjoy exploring more with your child: The Amazing Jellies Game! The kids really enjoyed this online activity.
Have an amazing summer and keep exploring!

Exploration: Oceans! - Open House Tonight!
Sorry it's been a couple of days since an update. Your kids have been very busy. We learned about jellyfish, seahorses, sea turtles, and symbiosis. Mostly we are excited about Open House tonight!
The kids have so much to show you and a lot to go home with them tonight.
In addition to visiting our classroom, stop by the other classrooms to see what they've been doing. Your child might find a class they'd like to try next year. A couple of the classes also have dramatic performances this evening. Finally, in the cafeteria there will be numerous items for sale, including food and Project SEEK shirts in case you didn't get one before.

Exploration: Oceans! - Day Eight
We were very busy today! We made our coral reefs. We also learned about parrot fish. Be sure to ask your child about what a parrot fish eats and then what happens afterward. We also learned about scientific names for animals; hopefully your students picked up a little Latin! We also had a not-so-successful simulation of coral. It was a new activity for me, and the kids were great about trying it. We had fun, but I won't be doing it again.
Tomorrow we'll learn about jellyfish.

Exploration: Oceans! - Day Seven
We had a great time today learning about the duck research project. We learned a lot about waves and currents. Students are getting very excited for our coral reef project on Monday. We have done our plastic bottle project already, so we don't need any more. We have enough toilet paper tubes and egg cartons, but if you have any more, please send them on Monday to help with our coral reef project. Thanks for your help with all the donations! If you didn't get a chance to see field trip photos, the slide show is just below.
Have a great weekend!

Exploration: Oceans! - Field Trip Photos
Below are the photos from the field trip. We had a great day! Some of your children are moving targets, but I tried to get everybody at least a few times.
Exploration: Oceans! - Day Five
Today the kids made paper plate fish with the different fins. They also learned about the parts of a wave and made wave bottles. These bottles should be coming home with kids today! (NOTE: They are not glued shut.) We learned some about tides and tide pools as well.
Students are very excited for their adventure tomorrow at Sea Life Aquarium. Please remember to:
Students are very excited for their adventure tomorrow at Sea Life Aquarium. Please remember to:
- Send a lunch with your child.
- Have your child wear their Project SEEK shirt (if they ordered one).
- Send $10 to help cover the cost of the trip. (This can be paid any time by the end of Project SEEK.)
Exploration: Oceans! - Day Four & Field Trip Information
Today our oceanographers finished their ocean zone foldable with paraphrasing. This was a new skill for many of the students, and they did a great job.
They also worked to create a kelp forest. Ask your child if they remember the names of the parts of kelp.
Field Trip Information:
We will be going to Sea Life Aquarium at the Mall of America this Thursday! Please remember to:

Exploration: Oceans! - Days two and Three
Our oceanographers have been busy!
On Friday we simulated an ocean floor and measured and graphed depth. We also set up a desalination experiment that we'll be checking in on next week. It takes a while because evaporation takes time.
Ask your children about the underwater goggles to simulate the lack of light in the depths of the ocean. Today we ran a relay to help us understand color and camouflage in the deep ocean. We also began work on a foldable about the ocean zones, including some research to figure out which animals live in which depth zones. Tomorrow we'll be finishing our ocean zone foldable and begin creating a kelp forest.
Also THANK YOU for the donations. We could still use a few more, especially egg cartons.
There are a just a couple of slots available for chaperones for Thursday. If you are interested, please let me know via email ([email protected]) or by sending a note with your child.

Exploration: Oceans! - Day One
Today was a great day! We learned about the water cycle and did a simulation with sponges. Your child should know the terms evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection and actions to accompany them. We did some measuring to help us compare the surface area of the ocean to the surface area of the continents. The kids observed a simulation of sonar waves with a dropper. Finally we did an egg experiment to help us learn about the density of saltwater. Tomorrow we will learn about desalination and bathymetry.
Donations
There are a few things we could use to help make our class successful. Please, if you have any egg cartons, clear plastic bottles with caps, or toilet paper or paper towel tubes, send them with your child tomorrow, Monday, or Tuesday.

Welcome to Exploration: Oceans!
I am so excited to meet everyone and begin our explorations. I'll update this page regularly with what we've been doing in class - including photos!
One way you can help make the class a success is by donating egg cartons and clear plastic bottles (any size). If you have any to donate, please send them with your child.
For our extended day, we will be taking a field trip to Sea Life Aquarium at the Mall of America. More details to come!
