Website update take two... Note to self, don't forget to save. :0)
As I was saying, our actors did an incredible job performing for real people today. There were lots of nerves going on this morning, but we saw their confidence grow. Mrs. Bakken will even confess to a few tears. We are so proud of them.
Just one last reminder that students should be at the North Branch Middle School tomorrow evening at 5:10. Our performance will begin at 5:20 p.m. We are in room 701. You are in for a TREAT! :0)

Monday came as it always does. Many of us were tired and needed to get the kinks worked out in warm-ups. After that, it was full steam ahead. We did a full run through of the show. Wow! Things are really coming together!! Before snack, we completed all but one song's choreography. Once we finished snack, we returned to finish that choreography and did another run of the show. This time blocking costume changes that happen. There was a bit of time at the end to do a little Broadway clip. It's one of my favorites! :0)
Our official performance is THIS THURSDAY evening at 5:20 p.m. Students should arrive at 5:10 to prepare. We do have some shows for SEEK students. If a parent or family member can't make it Thursday, we will perform on Wednesday and Thursday morning at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. in Room 701. Please let me know if you plan to attend during the day.

Today was filled with dancing! Choreography was the name of the game. We completed four dances, and all the rest have bits and pieces that will be finished on Monday. We are getting ever closer to performance time. Today was also our last day with our scripts, so keep working on those parts. :0)
Students painted some of their costumes today. We now have some phases of the moon and rings of Saturn, among others. These kids continue to blow us away. I can't tell you the number of times Mrs. Bakken and I have turned to each other and said, "This is the best group we've had." We enjoy them thoroughly.
Below are a couple of clips we shared with the kids from two of the most popular musicals on Broadway. These are from the Tony awards. We watched for unison and listened for volume while watching Hamilton. While watching School of Rock, we were trying to get our "rock" faces on. I must apologize that The School of Rock used the "d" word. It slipped by me while I was previewing. I know some people don't mind, but others might. I did add the link below, so use your discretion. You may also skip through the introductions. We also watched a clip from the musical Wicked... mainly because it's a favorite.

What an amazing day! Our brilliant actors and actresses turned into painters today. This musical's scenery was more time intensive than usual. Creating planets takes time... some more than others. :0) The kids researched their planets, made a plan of what colors they would need, and executed their ideas. We are just so impressed with them.
Today went a little something like this... updating costumes brought in, waiting for planets to be finished, carrying the paper down to the cafeteria to bring those planets to life, painting our hearts out, running through our production, working on costumes, enjoying a delicious lunch, cutting out our planets, waiting for planets to be placed in space, painting the rest of the solar system, singing and dancing to our music while waiting for everyone to finish, and being rewarded for all the hard work with a bit of fun on the playground. We're not sure about your children, but these teachers are exhausted... and thrilled with how much was accomplished. :0)

Today was FULL! Full of fun and movement! :0) We spent a lot of time on the show today. We did a full run through, made plans for tomorrow, and choreographed two of our songs. These kids have some great dance skills.
Thank you to all who have been bringing in costume items. The sooner you can get them in, the better. If you're having trouble finding something, please let us know, so we can help.
Just a reminder that tomorrow is our extended day. The kids will arrive at SEEK at 8:30 a.m. and will leave for home at 2:30 p.m. We will be starting our solar system painting right away. Please be sure they are dressed for painting. Our pizza party lunch will be at noon. There will be more choreography, blocking and fun.
Our performers were told that they will be having homework for the next few days. Scripts will be gone for good on Monday, so memorization is really important. We also need our soloists to work on their volume. They are really doing a great job! We couldn't be more proud of them. :0)

These kids don't let any grass grow under their feet. It's been another great day in Sing it, Act it, Shake it! When we arrived, costumes were first on the agenda. Mrs. Bakken looked at costumes and props that were brought in. We took time for some warm-ups and started blocking the show. Snack break followed, and then we continued our work on planet posters. Many groups finished and some have just a bit more that needs to be done. It was another awesome day!! Below are two documents that were sent home today. Please let us know if you have any questions! :0)

Day three was a very busy one for this crew. After warm-ups, we got on "stage" and walked through the whole musical. It was so much fun to see the improvement just since Friday. We could tell that a lot of them had been practicing over the weekend.
After a quick snack break, we got right into research mode. Our actors were divided into groups. We did a little warm-up activity where we found a bit of information on each planet as well as the sun. After that, they started their own research on their assigned planet. We were so impressed with how well they worked together. They didn't get to choose their partners this time, but you wouldn't have guessed it. After working in the computer lab, we returned to the classroom to do more research with planet books. From there, groups began their posters. Tomorrow will offer some more time to work on posters. We don't have a color printer for pictures of planets. Kids are welcome to print pictures at home (if it's OK with you) and bring them tomorrow.
We were left with just enough time to start talking costumes. Mrs. Bakken's mind has been reeling with ideas. Tomorrow we will get costume needs down on paper and sent home.
Have a great evening! :0)

Day two was pretty awesome as far as these two teachers are concerned. As you can see from the photos above, read-throughs and movement were the name of the game. Oh, and we played some name games too. ;0) Getting to know each other is so important in making our show come to life.
Next Thursday, June 23 is our extended day. This is a HUGE day for our class! We do stay on site in North Branch. It takes a while to create the whole solar system, so thankfully they are giving us a couple extra hours. :0) We do a lot of costume work, painting, choreography, and blocking on this day. We do ask that you send $6 to help cover the cost of lunch. Everything they need for lunch will be provided.
June 30th is our Open House night (5-7 p.m.) AND our big performance! Our show will begin at 5:20 p.m. We ask that the kids are to the school by 5:10p.m., so they can get into costumes and take a bathroom break.
Be on the look-out early next week for costume needs. We try to update this site daily with photos and information about our day.
Enjoy this beautiful weekend!

What an AMAZING first day of Sing it, Act it, Shake it!! Mrs. Bakken and Ms. Hitchcock had so much fun seeing some familiar faces and some new faces. We are excited when we are getting ready, and that excitement only grows when we are all together in one room. :0)
Our first day together was kind of a blur. We wanted to be sure we had enough time for try-outs, so no major warm-ups today (stretching, movement, dancing). We did some introductions, took a tour, played a name game, and listened to a read through of the script by Mrs. Bakken and Ms. Hitchcock. We warmed up our singing voices, had snack, and then the try-outs began.
Can we just say that we have an incredible class of very talented actors and actresses?!? We were SO blown away by their singing and acting abilities. As with every year, there are kiddos who are kind of sad they didn't get the part they really wanted. As the teachers of this class, we wish our students wouldn't walk away sad sometimes. We only hope that they come to see what we see in them. We will also be assigning some secondary parts tomorrow.
If possible, have your child highlight their parts in the script. Encourage them to start memorizing those parts. We can't wait for day two!!! :0)
