OUTDOOR ADVENTURES 2016
This year we have thirteen students. Our first day we went through what to do if you find yourself lost in the great outdoors by using the S.T.O.P. strategy. We learned and practiced our first knot, the square knot.
The students finished the day making survival bracelets.

DAY TWO
Today we put together our survival kits. You need to "Be Prepared." The Boy Scouts had it right; if you don't have it with you or don't know how to use it, you're in trouble in a survival situation. Our students now have the basis for what they need to make it in a unexpected outdoor emergency. They are learning about basic self first aid and practiced putting pressure wrap on themselves. We changed the grit on the rock polisher and checked stones progress.

REMINDER!!!! We need the permission slips back for your student to go on our field trips.
DAY 3
We learned how to erect an emergency shelter using a blue tarp. The students used the knots that they have been practicing and their new knowledge of proper site selection. We did a hypothermia exercise using ice water to show how quickly a person loses manual dexterity.
Day 4 Learning how to build a fire and practicing with a metal match. How to signal to be rescued by using a whistle or a mirror was practiced. Checking out rocks from the weekend trip to Michigan's U.P.
Day 5 The class started the fishing unit today. Fish ID sheets, popcan fishing rigs, and more fire craft practice. Prep for outdoor cooking tomorrow at Wild River State Park.
Extended Day (#6)
Our field trip to Wild River State Park had perfect weather. Mike, the park naturalist, lead our class in geocaching and compass/map orienteering. The class then hiked up to the picnic area to build cooking fires and cook their tinfoil burgers. After lunch was the photo scavenger hunt with the girls' team edging out the boys' teams by only 5 points.
